Labor Day Parade

  • Greenbelt Baptist Church 101 Greenhill Road Greenbelt, MD, 20770 United States (map)

On Monday, September 4th at 10:00 a.m Pack 202 will be marching in the parade, which goes straight down Crescent Road in Historic Greenbelt.

The walk starts around Greenbelt Baptist Church and ends just past the Greenbelt Municipal building where we will need to quickly exit the road to make room for other parade participants to exit. After the parade everyone usually goes their own way. Pack 202 usually wins some sort of award.

Arrive no later than 9:45 a.m. for a sharp start time of 10:00 a.m. You should be able to arrive as early as 9 a.m. if you'd like.

When the parade starts, we must move! We are unfortunately unable to wait for anyone who arrives late. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to maneuver around closed roads, find parking and walk.

There is no parking along the parade route, only in the nearby neighborhoods (Greenhill Road, Lastner Lane) and possibly in Buddy Attick parking lot. Keep in mind, the parade ends near the Library/Municipal building. So you may consider carpooling one way or the other if you don’t think your scout can handle all that walking.

Where: The parade entrants will line up on Crescent Road, between Greenbelt Baptist Church and Buddy Attick Park entrance. We are usually closer to Greenbelt Baptist Church, however, we won't know our exact spot til possibly the morning of.

What to wear and bring: Bring water, wear a hat and/or sunscreen. A lot of the parade route is sunny, and it may be hot. If you can, wear your full uniform (with the shirt tucked in). If you don’t have a uniform, try to wear a Class B shirt (if you have one) or a scout related shirt. If you don't have those either, no worries. Wear blue, or green, or really just something that is comfortable to walk in.

Who: 202 Cub Scouts, their adult guardian, siblings are welcome. Scouts/siblings must be accompanied by their guardian, or an adult who agrees to stay with and be responsible for them.

What's the Plan: We will keep it simple and march in the parade. We will bring our Pack 202 flag & banner. One suggested idea was to focus on the scout law. We can create signs with the words of the scout law (A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent). 12 scouts can hold a word from the scout law. Once we get to the judges, we can recite (yell loudly) the scout law (Please try to practice with your scout before Monday if possible so they can feel confident). Maybe we can do a very short skit? If we have 1-2 scouts assigned to each word, we can demonstrate the words with actions (example: for the word brave a scout can puff their chest out and wear a cape, for friendly two scouts can hug or hold hands and raise them up, for clean a scout can pretend to wash their hands or body with a big sponge, or pick up trash, etc).

We can plan to meet for an hour or so over Labor Day Weekend to create the signs. If you have the materials and an idea for the signs, or if you are willing to provide a meeting space, please reach out. We can use all the help we can get!
